The Head

He holds it in his hands
tries to guess its weight
tosses it up and catches it.

He places it on the counter
makes sure it won't roll away
grabs a cleaver from the knife rack.

Steadies it with one hand
brings the knife down with a vicious swipe
splits it nicely in half.

His mother walks in,
shakes her head, says,
"What's taking so long with the salad?"
