Spinal Trap

By Elizabeth Barrette

When the hairs
on the back of my neck
stood up
and ran squealing into the night,
I knew I was in trouble.

When my skin crawled
under the bed,
I tried to put down the book,
but by then it was too late.

When the shivers
ran down my spine,
peeling the muscles away
with their sharp little teeth
I fell to the floor.

The book
lay in a spreading pool
of my blood, lapping,
and with fading thought
I realized I should have known
from the title on its spine –
Carnal Appetites.
