Current Notes:

June 22 Update

We regret the delay that we've experienced in the past months, but we're finally at a point where we can afford to pay our contributors!  Yeay!

All work we have and have accepted will be posted on the website by the end of June.

Checks will be going out during June, July, and early August.  You should receive your payment, and your copy of the anthology(ies) during July and August.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me through email at ksanger@fromtheasylum.com

I apologize for all the delays we're run into.  Unfortunately, this is one of the problem you run into when you run a small press out of a love for excellent fiction instead of an urge to make money.

Thank you for all your patience, and for all your truly wonderful stories.

April 1 Updates:

From the Asylum regretfully announces that it will be shuttering its doors in the coming months.

At this point, the online portion will run through July.

As of April 1, 2009, we are closed to all future submissions.

We are finishing selecting fiction for the final issues.  You will hear from us by the end of April one way or the other.

The Things Aren't What They Seem anthology is in process and *will* be published while FTA is still up and running.

Similarly, the final yearly anthology will be coming out during the last month of our online presence.  It will contain all stories that have not yet been anthologized, including those of the last months of FTA.

While it was a fun run, and we have hopes of bringing it back, at this time life and financial constraints are making it too difficult to come out with a monthly paying publication.

Thank you for all your readership and submissions in our years.

Good luck!

October 31, 2008 Updates!

General Announcement:
As of October 15, we began once again showcasing new fiction and poetry.  We’re glad to be back, but we know we still have quite a way to go before we’re caught up and running back at full capacity.  Responses to submissions are going out and will continue to do so.  You may submit new work, but please realize that it will most likely be a minimum of three months before we get to reading it.

Yearly Anthology:
At this time, the yearly anthology (Year 4) is ready to go to press but is waiting on cover art.  Our usual graphic artist has had a family emergency of his own.  We are open to queries from graphic artists for the creation of the cover.  Please contact us at ksanger@fromtheasylum.com with your payment requirements and experience.

Things Aren’t What They Seem:
Acceptances and rejections of all submissions have gone out, both mail and email.  If you have not heard from us, please send us an email at ksanger@fromtheasylum.com as some of the emails did bounce and I’m sure if it’s my system that is at fault.
We are re-opening the submission period, to last from October 31 until December 31.  While we received a number of excellent stories, we have not yet reached our desired length as the anthology will not be heavy enough to assist in beating our alien neighbors.
Guidelines remain the same.  We are still looking for both flash fiction (under 1,000 words) and longer works (up to 5,000 words).
There are two important things I would like to emphasize, however.

  • Aliens *must be* the main thrust.  No tacked on aliens that don’t figure into the plot.
  • Humor is preferred over horror (although humorous horror often works for us!).

4/20/08 - March and April are up! Sorry about the delay!

Update on Response Time:

As of 1/18/08, responses should have been sent to all work we received before October 3.  If you do not have a response by the 18th, please email us and let us know.  Sometimes SPAM filters do get in the way.

Contest: What is FTA - Click on the Contest link for more information.

Donation Announcement: Please use the PayPal link to donate.  FTA costs a minimum of $120 a month, not including yearly operating costs.  Help us keep going.  We’re not proud.  We’ll beg.  Pleeeease.  Even a dollar makes a difference.  Thank you!

Anthology Announcements: Things Aren’t What They Seem

edited by Katherine Sanger

In the grand tradition of SF, we are looking for stories about aliens among us.  They can be trying to fit in, take over, or steal away the promotion that you deserve.  Does your neighbor drink an awful lot of milk?  That guy at work not seem right?  Who are they?  What are they doing here?

Click on the Anthology button for more information.

FTA Year 4: Is in process!  We should have a publication date posted shortly.
